Editor's Note: On Aug. 14, the following email was received from Jim Face, owner of the Celebrity Room: "The Celebrity Room Restaurant closed on August 12th with no current plans to re-open."
For more than 30 years, The Celebrity Room was a West End favorite, known as much for its "Elvis Room" and year-round Christmas decorations as it was for its pizza. Gus Serafim opened the popular family restaurant in 1963, and passed the torch to his son Alan, who was forced to close in 1994.
In May, Alan brought the Celebrity Room back to life in a new location in the T.J. Maxx Shopping Center on West Broad. The new incarnation is smaller than the original, but filled with kitschy posters and pictures, and the trademark Christmas trees and lights.
While the old Celebrity had a dedicated Elvis Room, due to the smaller size, The King now shares space with Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, the Beatles -- even Mr. Potato Head -- and the jukebox holds nostalgic tunes from all of the aforementioned recording artists, in addition to a selection of Christmas carols.
The story here is still about the pizza. This is the spot to grab a large pie after your kid's soccer or football game, or to top off a night of bowling or shopping. With 11 options, including a make-your-own, the pizzas are large enough to serve four and have a nice, thin and crispy crust.

I tried the Celebrity Classic ($16.95), a loaded supreme with pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, and green pepper, but they also offer a plain cheese and a white pizza (both $12.95), as well as Veggie, Hawaiian, BBQ Chicken, Cheeseburger, and California styles. Both the dough and tomato sauce are homemade daily, the hallmark of a "real" pizzeria.
Entrées include Veal and Chicken Parmigiana ($9.95), Chicken Cacciatore, and a variety of pasta dishes from lasagna and classic spaghetti with meat sauce, to Stuffed Shells and Manicotti. We tried the Veal Parm and the Manicotti, and, sadly, have to say that these were mediocre at best. Stick with the specialty of the house, the pizza, and add on a Greek, Chef, or Italian salad ($3.95-$5.95).
Smaller 10-inch pizzas on the lunch menu are reasonably priced from $5.95-$7.95, with add-on side salads at $2.95, and you can call ahead anytime for takeout.
Still waiting for its liquor license, the Celebrity Room currently has a selection of soft drinks, and since it's non-smoking as well, is a good choice for a family outing.
