VCU Medical Center Background
- Created in 1838 as the Medical Department of Hampden-Sydney College.
- The Medical Department offered first permanent home at the Egypt Building.
- In 1854, the school received a charter and became the Medical College of Virginia.
- Innis Steinmetz, class of 1920, is the first woman to enter MCV.
- In 2000, Virginia Commonwealth University Health System Authority was established.
- VCU Medical Center houses the nation's second oldest transplant program.
- Today, VCU Medical Center enrolls more than 1,000 students in the School of Medicine and 22 graduate degree programs.
- VCU is the only academic medical center in Central Virginia and has the region's only Level 1 Trauma Center.
