After being locked down for most of the afternoon, police say the University of Richmond campus is safe again after searching for a man who may have been armed and loose on campus around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
According to University of Richmond spokesperson Brian Eckert, between 2:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m., a man in his mid-20s attempted to enter the Boatwright Memorial Library. For unknown reasons, university staff at the circulation desk denied the gentleman entry to the library and called police.
As the suspect left the library, witnesses, who described him as "dangerous looking," said they saw him start changing his clothes and putting then in a military-style duffle bag. They also said they saw the suspect wearing a holstered gun of some sort.
The suspect is described as a white male, about 5' 11", with a slender build. He was last seen wearing a navy blue shirt and a jacket that says "Sherriff" on the back. He was also wearing a fake beard and a big hat.
After leaving the library, witnesses said the suspect walked down a hill beside the library and headed towards a nearby pond.
Helicopters and a search plane circled the campus overhead but the search was eventually expanded to include a nearby shopping center on Patterson Avenue, where the suspect may have also been seen. Several private secondary schools in the area, such as St. Catherine's, were also put on lockdown as a precautionary measure.
Police officers found a piece of fake beard near the library, which may have been the suspect's. They used bloodhounds to search for the suspect put the trail went cold, according to officials at the scene.
