This is the time of year that everyone loves. The weather is warm, the days are longer and the flowers are in bloom.
It's the perfect time of year to get outside and do things … provided there aren't three straight days of downpours.
But the obvious assets asides, everyone has their individual favorite thing about spring. For some it's the opportunity to garden, for others it's enjoying the great outdoors. But for me, it's all about the springtime food festivals.
Let's face it, Richmond has some of the best. And all-month long, the food festivals are here. From Asian and Greek to an all-new food festival extravaganza, May is jam-packed with delicious, culture-based festivals dedicated to food. And Richmond.com has you covered on the details.
Asian Festival: This weekend it's the 11th annual Asian American Celebration. Richmonders can sample all of the food, culture and traditions that Asia has to offer. This year, the Filipino community is spotlighted and their cuisine will likely be center stage as well. Filipino cuisine pulls flavors from Spain, India, China and Japan. The festival will be held at the Greater Richmond Convention Center from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 3. Admission is free. For more information, call (804) 245-4974.
Lebanese Food Festival: Last year, more than 20,000 people headed over to St. Anthony's Maronite Catholic Church in Glen Allen for a weekend of delicious Mediterranean flavors and I'm sure this year won't be any different. That's right, the 24th annual Lebanese Food Festival is right around the corner. Grape leaves, kabobs, tahini and falafel are just a few of the delicious items on the menu. The festival will again be held at St. Anthony's Maronite Catholic, 4611 Sadler Rd. in Glen Allen from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 18. Admission is free. For more information, call (804) 346-1161.
Broad Appetit Food Festival: There's only one event in town where you can sample dishes from more than 25 of Richmond's hottest chefs. Comfort, Six Burner, La Grotta, 1 North Belmont Restaurant, Enoteca Sogno, TJ's at The Jefferson and Zed Café are only a handful of the local restaurants whose chefs will be cooking it up at Broad Appetit, the inaugural food festival of art in Richmond. The festival brings together culinary artists and artists in the traditional sense for a day long feeding-frenzy. You can stuff yourself full of delicious food, beautiful art and ideas. This event is destined to become a classic. The festival will be held on Broad Street, between Monroe and Adams streets (one block east of Belvidere) from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday May 18. Admission is free. For more information, visit broadappetit.com
