The Rochester Red Wings beat the Richmond Braves 9-5 in the season opener for both clubs Thursday at The Diamond. The Braves had three leads but the Red Wings erupted for six runs in the final two innings.
Richmond took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Barbaro Canizares. The Red Wings tied the game in the second on a run scoring single by Randy Ruiz. Richmond moved back in front in the second when Wes Timmons scored on a balk. Rochester tied the game in the third when Jason Pridie scored on a balk. Ruiz doubled a run home in the fourth to give the Wings their first lead 3-2.
In the sixth the Braves re-gained the lead, scoring three runs. Brandon Jones knocked in a run with a bases loaded walk to tie the game. Canizares chased two runs home with a single to put the Braves in front 5-3. Rochester batted around in the eighth inning to move in front to stay. Garrett Jones singled a run home. Two more came in on a throwing error. Howie Clark capped the rally with a sacrifice fly, giving Rochester a 7-5 lead. The Wings added two more runs in the ninth on RBI singles by Alexi Casilla and Jones.
Ricky Barrett picked up the win. Damian Moss took the loss. Jones had three of the Red Wings 12 hits. Canizares had three hits and three RBI for the Braves.
The same two clubs tangle again at 7 p.m. today at The Diamond. Jo-Jo Reyes will pitch for Richmond against the Red Wings Brian Duensing.
