For the fifth year in a row, the Goochland County-based automotive retailer CarMax Inc. has been named one of the Richmond region’s top places to work.

CarMax was among four companies that received the highest honors in their respective size categories in the fifth annual Top Workplaces awards program, sponsored by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Nearly 600 people attended the awards event Thursday night in the ballroom at the Altria Theater in Richmond.

CarMax was first in the mega-size category for companies with 1,000 or more employees.

Also receiving first-place awards were:

  • the medical and surgical supplies distributor McKesson Medical-Surgical Inc., in the category for large companies with 400 to 999 employees;
  • the real estate firm Joyner Fine Properties, in the midsize category of companies with 125 to 399 employees; and
  • the Richmond Allergy & Asthma Specialists medical practice in the small category for companies with 124 or fewer employees.

“For over 25 years, (Richmond) has embraced our disruptive business model to change the way Americans buy and sell cars,” said Diane Cafritz, CarMax’s chief human resources officer, when accepting the award. “And Richmond has provided us with exceptional talent to fuel our growth. We are so pleased to be a part of making Richmond a great place to work and live.”

The winners emerged from among 65 organizations that were named on the Top Workplaces list. Their employees took confidential surveys about their workplace experiences. Energage, an employee research and consulting firm based in suburban Philadelphia, administered the surveys. In all, the firm received responses from about 17,760 employees in the area.

Founded in 1993, CarMax operates 190 retail stores in 41 states. Its Richmond-area operations employ 1,488 people and include its corporate office in Goochland, a digital and technology innovation center in downtown Richmond, and auto stores in the counties of Chesterfield and Henrico.

McKesson Medical-Surgical is an affiliate of the California-based Fortune 500 company McKesson Corp. Locally, the company employs more than 700 people and provides medical and surgical supplies to physicians’ offices, home care agencies, long-term care facilities and surgery centers.

Founded in 1973, Joyner Fine Properties has four offices in the Richmond area and 179 local employees.

Richmond Allergy & Asthma Specialists, which has an office in Henrico, has 37 employees.

“Our place survives and runs, and we have developed a great reputation because of our employees,” said Dr. Lawrence E. Gelber, the company’s president and managing director.

Times-Dispatch Business Editor Gregory J. Gilligan served as moderator for the awards event.
