Carytown's Chop Suey Books named the best bookstore in Virginia

  • 0

Chop Suey Books is the best bookstore in Virginia, according to Mental Floss, an entertainment website that picks the top bookstore in every state.

Chop Suey is at 2913 W. Cary St. in Richmond’s Carytown neighborhood, but its original location opened at 1317 W. Cary St. in 2002. That spot was once a restaurant called George’s Chop Suey, and the building came with the sign. So that’s how Chop Suey Books got its name.

The store sells new and used books and regularly hosts book events. It was named the best by Mental Floss because of its “eclectic approach, which ranges across subject matter and material” — and it has the “very sweet black-and-white cat known to lounge in the shop windows.” The cat’s name, fittingly, is WonTon.

Mental Floss also recognized One More Page Books (Arlington), BookPeople (Richmond) and Blue Whale Books (Charlottesville). Fountain Bookstore is another local favorite.
