A new LGBTQ-themed film series will run every Monday from June 3 to July 1 at 7 p.m. at the Byrd Theatre called “MonGays.”
June is Pride month, the month chosen to highlight a positive stance lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people.
“With the Virginia Pride festival is held in September, Virginia Pride has been looking for an opportunity to engage our community during the month of June,” James Millner, the president of Virginia Pride, said.
Each Monday night, the Byrd will screen a different LGBTQ-themed film, sponsored by a local organization with connections to the theme.
Here is the schedule:
June 3: Rafiki
June 10: Tangerine
June 17: Saturday Church
June 24: Paris Is Burning
July 1: Pariah
The movies focus on themes of forbidden love and resilience, youth, the trans community, the drag/ballroom community and the black LGBTQ experience.
There will be opportunities for discussion following each film.
The movies are open to the public with a suggested donation of $4 admission for the organization sponsoring the film.
Participating organizations sponsoring the screening of the films include Diversity Richmond, Side by Side (formerly ROSMY), Health Brigade, Nationz Foundation and Black Pride RVA.
“This is a tremendous opportunity to do something different for our community, allow us to celebrate Pride month and bring our community together,” Millner said.
