Longwood College has cancelled classes for the remainder of the semester and final exams because of a huge fire at the school's Rotunda.

Firefighters got the call just before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night. The fire swept through Ruffner complex, which includes Grainger Hall, West Ruffner, East Ruffner, and the landmark Rotunda. The building was undergoing a major renovation. The fire also spread to Tabb and French dormitories. About 350 students were safely evacuated and moved to Lancer Gym where they spent the night. They may not be allowed to return to their dorms for several days. Meantime, other students are packing up and heading home, now that classes are over for the year.
