Cartoon: Out on a limb

Cartoon: Out on a limb

Two Monday letters criticized an April 16 cartoon by Robert Ariail, which the writers described as promoting racial stereotypes. The cartoon, labeled "out on a limb," depicted a tree with three branches — legislative, judicial and executive.

It showed Obama on a limb named "criticism to court" in reference to his controversial statements regarding the Supreme Court and Obamacare. As the limb cracks and snaps, the president says maybe he should shimmy back that statement. Obama is wearing a business suit.

We're used to some readers seeing what they want to in political cartoons. "Out on a limb" frequently serves as a metaphor. A slur did not occur. We'll save the cartoonists' license to take liberties with caricatures for another day.
