City closes Belle Isle emergency vehicle bridge

The city of Richmond has closed the bridge that provides the only emergency vehicle access to Belle Isle in the middle of the James River.

The bridge, which runs 650 feet from the south side of the island to the southern bank of the James River just west of the Lee Bridge, has numerous broken welds under the deck, said John R. Pope Jr., the city's director of parks, recreation and community facilities.

Pope said the bridge, constructed with steel girders and a wood-plank deck, likely will be closed for an extended period while the welds are redone.
