Michael J. Carlson, 47, of Mechanicsville, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and DUI after striking and killing a roadside jogger on Monday, according to the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2008 Toyota Sequoia was traveling west on East Patrick Henry Road when it ran off the right side of the roadway while in a curve and struck a pedestrian,” Lt. Chris R. Whitley said in a statement. “The pedestrian was jogging east on the westbound shoulder of the roadway.”

The woman was struck at about 8 a.m. and was transported to the VCU Medical Center, where she later died, according to Whitley.

An email from a Richmond-area running group said the victim was Meg Cross Menzies, of Hanover.

Carlson is being held without bond at Pamunkey Regional Jail pending an arraignment in Hanover General District Court.

Crash team deputies are continuing to investigate the incident.
