Virginia to host Oregon in football this season

CHARLOTTESVILLE - The University of Virginia and the University of Oregon have reached a tentative deal on a home-and-home football series that will begin in Charlottesville this season.

The deal also includes a return trip to Oregon, tentatively scheduled for the 2016 season.

The game, to be played on Sept. 7, will take the place of U.Va.'s scheduled trip to Penn State. The Nittany Lions canceled that contract last week.

Oregon is one of the most successful teams of the past decade in college football, and has reached the BCS each of the last four seasons. The Ducks will have a new coach, though, as Chip Kelly recently left to take the head job of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Scheduling Oregon at home gives the Cavaliers eight home games for the first time in program history.

The schedule will also be a ticket sales bonanza, with U.Va. hosting Oregon, Clemson, BYU, Georgia Tech and the Commonwealth Cup against Virginia Tech.

Virginia also strengthens its ties to the West Coast. The Wahoos are currently scheduled to play at BYU in 2014, at UCLA in 2015, at Oregon in 2016 and at Stanford in 2018.
