Richmond firefighters are back on the scene this morning of a small brush fire on Belle Isle.
Crews had attempted to douse the fire late Wednesday but decided to let the blaze burn itself out as conditions posed no hazard to the main part of the island but could have been a risk to firefighters, a spokesman said.
One firefighter suffered a cut leg and was taken to a hospital for evaluation, said Lt. Christopher Armstrong. The wound was not believed to be serious.
Crews were initially called to the river about 5:47 p.m. on Wednesday. Crews returned to the scene around 7:30 a.m. Thursday, and Armstrong said they'll likely be working until around noon trying to extinguish the fire.
The fire started among a pile of logs that had washed up on the edge of the island after recent heavy rains, Armstrong said.
