Del. John M. O’Bannon III, R-Henrico, announced today that he's seeking another term representing the 73rd House District, and he's already facing competition from a Democrat.
Tom Shields, who teaches in the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond, has hired a campaign manager and is raising money and knocking on doors in the district that includes parts of Henrico County and Richmond.
O’Bannon, the only practicing physician in the House, won his seat in a December 2000 special election.
“For nine years, I have been working to achieve real results for the people of Henrico and Richmond,” he said in a statement today.
Shields says O'Bannon has grown out of touch with the district.
"I think it was time to look at building a new generation of leadership in western Henrico," he said. "It's time for someone to step up and hold these individuals accountable."
O’Bannon serves on the powerful House Appropriations Committee and is married to Patricia O’Bannon, who serves on the Henrico County Board of Supervisors.
All 100 House seats are up for re-election in November.
