    The recent arrest of a prominent local woman on child pornography and enticement charges continues to send shockwaves through the community. While Charlottesville and Albemarle County courts deal each year with a handful of male child pornography users, a woman accused of such crimes is much rarer.

    "The defense needs additional time to review discovery, meet with Ms. Hoppe, obtain relevant records, and perform necessary investigation," wrote Assistant Federal Public Defender Ned Smock.

    Robert Hanssen, a former FBI agent and Virginia resident who took more than $1.4 million in cash and diamonds to trade secrets with Moscow in one of the most notorious spying cases in American history, died in prison Monday. The death came 22 years after he was arrested in a Fairfax County park.

    This year marks the 79th anniversary of D-Day. About 160,000 troops from Britain, the U.S., Canada and elsewhere who landed on French beaches on June 6, 1944, to restore freedom to Europe after Nazi occupation.
