Times-Dispatch wins 16 first-place awards in Virginia Press Association's annual news, advertising contests

Alison has a rare life-threatening genetic disorder called Ehlers-Danlos and is waiting till she can have surgery in Germany for it. After getting this news, Elizabeth may plan to also have surgery in Germany. They have common painful symptoms, but Elizabeth has not been diagnosed with the disorder. Jack Moyers, 98, a U.S. Navy pilot during WWII, was greeted by Lindsey Weaver and her six-year-old daughter Annabella, as he waited alone to be loaded on the bus to begin his Honor Flight at the VFW post in Mechanicsville. The Richmond Times-Dispatch has won its second grand sweepstakes award recognizing overall excellence in news and advertising.

The Times-Dispatch won its first grand sweepstakes last year. This year, the newspaper earned a combined 47 awards in the 2018 Virginia Press Association journalism and advertising contest, including a best in show for daily advertising.

The awards were announced Saturday night at the VPA’s annual banquet in Norfolk at the Hilton Norfolk The Main hotel. The 2018 contest was judged by the Iowa Press Association.

The news and editorial staffs earned 12 first-place awards, while the advertising department earned four first-place honors.
