HORTON, Claire McMillan, of Richmond, Va., born on October 15, 1982 in New York City, N.Y., passed away in the loving arms of her mother and father, Mary and Tom Horton, on September 13, 2013. Claire attended St. Bridget School and graduated from St. Gertrude High School. She was also a graduate of East Carolina University, where she majored in communications and was an active member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. She worked in public relations in New York City, and lived there for six years. Recently, she worked at the Richmond Ballet and the Valentine History Museum. Claire loved music and dance, and was a student of the Richmond Ballet for nine years. Her many friends were a life-long blessing to her. She was a loyal, genuine and honest friend to them all. Her grace, loveliness and dignity served her well during her battle with neuroendocrine cancer. Claire's spiritual strength and sense of humor allowed her to embrace life fully during times of happiness and difficulty. Her family and friends will be forever grateful for her legacy. During her illness, Claire was treated with compassion and respect by Dr. Zachary Bush and his staff in Scottsville, Va. In addition to her parents, Claire is survived by her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ella K. McMillan; her aunts and uncles, Sally and Ralph McMillan and Shelley and George McMillan all of Charlotte, N.C., Patti and Tim Horton of Murrell's Inlet, S.C., Bitsey and Bob Martin of Ft. Mill, S.C. and Katie and Tim Bemisderfer of Athens, Ga.; and her cousins, Sara, Dorothy, Eleanor, Peter, Kari, Carson and Cole. Claire was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Albert Porter McMillan Jr.; and her paternal grandparents, Barbara and Jim Horton. A celebration of Claire's life will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 18 at St. James's Episcopal Church, 1205 W. Franklin St., Richmond. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Revolution Health Center, 190 James River Rd., P. O. Box 489, Scottsville, Va. 23590 and the Claire M. Horton Fund of the Richmond Ballet, 407 Canal St., Richmond, Va. 23219.
