The entire nation is experiencing a critical blood shortage. According to the American Red Cross, the annual summer slump in donations is worse than usual this year. Blood supplies across the country are at dire levels. Many blood centers are reporting a two-day supply of blood on hand — or less. In many areas, there may not be enough blood to save lives should a severe multivehicle accident or other mass casualty event occur.
Bernadette Law, with the Richmond Red Cross, says donations are down 20 percent. July has been especially lean. Nationwide, there were 550 fewer American Red Cross blood drives held the week of July 4 than last year. This month is traditionally when most Americans take summer vacations. And a booming economy means more folks than ever are traveling and fewer than ever are thinking about our blood supply.
If eligible, please make an appointment to donate. Contact the American Red Cross or Virginia Blood Services. Information is readily available online. The need is especially critical for type O donors. Never given before? It’s easy, relatively painless, and usually takes under an hour.

Only about one in four Americans is eligible to donate due to health issues or other extenuating factors. Only about one in 10 Americans actually does donate — and that number is falling. When asked why they don’t give, most people say they’ve simply never thought about it.
Today, we ask that if you are eligible, think very hard about giving. In fact, don’t just think — act. The life you save may belong to someone you love.
