Chris Gentilviso, who has an impressive background in digital and political reporting, has joined the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s Opinions pages as associate opinions editor.

He began his new job on July 1 and rounds out our team of Pamela Stallsmith, Opinions page editor, and Robin Beres, deputy opinions editor. He replaces Cindy Paris, senior editor for commentary, who retired in April after a 40-year career at the RTD.

Gentilviso, 31, graduated in May from the University of North Carolina School of Media and Journalism, where he was a Roy H. Park Fellow and earned a two-year, paid master’s appointment to pursue research and reporting on Southern politics and policy issues. Topics included voter registration trends, Federal Election Commission spending patterns and local control of monuments. He also worked as opinion content producer for

Previously he was politics editor and front page editor of The Huffington Post. As politics editor, he covered breaking news, handled social media accounts and developed video strategies for HuffPost Live. Additionally, he worked as a reporter and producer for and as a writer for Working America.

A native of New York City, Gentilviso graduated from the Bronx High School of Science and earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism, with a minor in political science, from Northwestern University.

“I’m so excited to join the RTD Opinions team,” he said. “There are so many critical issues for us to address here in Richmond, and The Times-Dispatch is driving the search for solutions.”

Gentilviso will bring experience in data-driven reporting to our editorial writing, which will add a new layer of depth and analysis to our commentary. Besides writing, he will handle the daily op-ed pages and help expand our social media presence.

“We were instantly impressed with his desire to learn all aspects of Richmond and the state, and to approach his opinions work with an eye toward data,” said Paige Mudd, executive editor of the RTD. “Our readers will quickly see what made Chris a must-hire for The Times-Dispatch.”
