An Achievable Dream was founded in 1992 as a partnership between Newport News Public Schools and the local business community. AAD develops independent, productive citizens through a social, academic and moral education dedicated to the belief that all children can learn and succeed regardless of socioeconomic background.
Each year since 2001, businesses and individuals have stepped forward to serve as a class sponsor for the graduating class of students as they take the next step on their journey. Their generous support ensures that financial constraints will never be a barrier to An Achievable Dream graduate attending college. This year Bill Downey and his wife Carol Downey, in partnership with Riverside Health System, are sponsoring An Achievable Dream’s Class of 2023.
Retiring CEO of Riverside Health System Bill Downey said, “To see what these students have achieved is a remarkable testament to their commitment to learning and to the dream created by Walter 30 years ago. Carol and our entire family are excited to see what these fantastic young people will be able to accomplish, and we are so fortunate to be able to support them in this way.”
Since the organization was founded 30 years ago, partnerships and community support have remained key to the success of An Achievable Dream. “We are so grateful to the Downey Family and Riverside Health System for their continued support of An Achievable Dream,” said Lee Vreeland, Ph.D., president and CEO of An Achievable Dream. “Whether through class sponsorship, planned giving, partnerships with our local first responders or our annual toy drive, we are so grateful for the support of our community. Every gift, big and small, makes such an impact on our students.”
As we think about how to give back to our communities this holiday season, what better way than giving the gift of education?
