What does career growth look like at your organization, and how do employees see a long-term future there?
Even though we’re a large company, it comes down to individual plans and aspirations. We think, “What does success look like for each employee?” We cultivate strong coaching relationships with monthly meetings as the expectation. A lot is about what you want to do next. In other industries there’s a sense that the trajectory of your career is already laid out for you. Our leaders can be intentional about how we staff our jobs and put people on the right projects for them and for the company.

What steps have you taken to promote employee well-being and prevent burnout?
Construction is one of those industries that’s deadline based. So, we think proactively and make sure that teams are appropriately staffed. We also have an inherent cultural philosophy of celebrating wins. It can’t be all grind. We provide generous benefits, one of which is a three-week sabbatical every five years for administrative employees in addition to normal PTO.
With AI and automation reshaping many industries, how are you helping employees feel prepared and be assured they will not be replaced by emerging technology?
A lot of our conversations center around AI and other technologies as tools. We are going to be able to work alongside technology. We’re utilizing AI for digital modeling and sophisticated construction to diagnose challenges before they exist. We are not paper pushers or button pushers. We’re using technology more for diagnosing the real challenges.
How do you encourage philanthropy and a connection to the Greater Richmond community among your employees?
Something that is fundamental about our company’s philosophy is being an integral part of our communities. We partner closely with organizations like the Boys & Girls Clubs, Henrico CASA and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond. We encourage a blend of volunteering, using our own hands as well as philanthropic constructions. We want our teams to be involved, to make connections between people and places.
