HITT is one of the nation’s largest general contractors, serving communities in a dozen states. HITT began as a decorating business in the dining room of founders Warren and Myrtle Hitt, and today the company works projects large and small, providing a range of commercial construction services, including complex core and shell buildings, renovations and interior fit-outs, as well as routine service work.

What do you believe most contributed to your organization being recognized as a Top Workplace this year?
What sets us apart is the combination of meaningful work and connection. We’re in a period of strong growth across mission critical data centers, interiors and advanced manufacturing construction work, which brings both opportunity and stability for our people. Just as importantly, we’ve built a culture where team members genuinely support one another, on our job sites and in day-to-day office work.

What does career growth look like at your organization, and how do employees see a long-term future there?
Career growth at HITT is intentional and clearly defined, with pathways supported by hands-on experience, mentorship, and structured development programs. In Richmond, team members gain exposure to complex, high-impact projects early in their careers. Combined with programs like HITT Futures, cohort educational opportunities, ongoing leadership development and tuition reimbursement, our employees can see a long-term trajectory, not just a role, but a career that evolves as they do.
What’s one initiative that has had the greatest impact on employee morale?
One of the most impactful drivers of morale in Richmond has been our intentional focus on bringing people together in meaningful, informal settings. Our all-hands meetings, often held at local venues like breweries, create space to share lessons learned, align as a team and strengthen relationships. Those gatherings, combined with regular team celebrations and community events, reinforce a strong sense of camaraderie and shared purpose.
With AI and automation reshaping many industries, how are you helping employees feel prepared and be assured they will not be replaced by emerging technology?
We see AI and automation as tools that enhance the capabilities of our people, not replace them. Our focus is on ensuring teams are equipped, trained and confident in using emerging technologies to improve how we plan, build and deliver projects.
How does being based in the Richmond region influence your workplace culture?
Richmond’s strong sense of community and momentum as a growing market directly shape our culture. A large portion of our team is originally from the Richmond area. We grew up here, built our networks here, and take pride in contributing to the region’s growth. That local connection strengthens how we work together and how we show up for our clients.
How do you encourage philanthropy and a connection to the Greater Richmond community among your employees?
Community involvement is an essential part of how we operate. We’re intentional about supporting organizations that make a local impact, including the American Heart Association’s Hard Hats with Heart and the American Red Cross. We also partner with local schools to introduce students to careers in construction and help broaden awareness of opportunities in the industry.
