How do you feel your workplace culture contributes to your company being named a Top Workplace?
Throughout our 162-year history, one thing has remained the same: our core values. We also pride ourselves on our company tenure and believe it’s a true testament to our workplace culture and the recognition we have received over the years. Many employees have been with us for over 25 years, and as an employee-owned firm, that is very important to us.

How do you ensure employees feel heard, valued and supported in their roles while fostering open communication at all levels of the organization?
Our culture and organizational structure foster opportunities for employees to connect on both personal and professional levels. Our managers are accessible and actively participate in smaller team settings. We regularly host company-wide events to show appreciation for our associates and provide annual training opportunities for both employees and managers.
What’s so important about having an attractive benefits package?
One of our top priorities is to provide an inclusive benefits package that is appealing to all ages, families and lifestyles. Last year, we began working with Carrot Fertility, a benefit that offers comprehensive support and resources to help employees and their families achieve their family-building goals. We have also partnered with CareATC to provide an on-site health center exclusively for our employees and their family members. Our nurse practitioner has become the primary care doctor for many of our employees. We have also maintained an attractive retirement plan for multiple decades, contributing 10 percent of each employee’s eligible annual earnings every year since 1975.

Philanthropic support is important to your organization. Why is supporting organizations important for businesses like yours, and how does corporate social responsibility influence your employees?
Our company has a long history of supporting organizations and projects in the communities where our offices are located. Through our community outreach program, Davenport Shares, we are proud to support charitable organizations that provide life-enhancing services in our neighborhoods. Davenport Shares organizes volunteer days within the communities in which we live and work. In Richmond, we have volunteered with the Richmond SPCA, the Junior Achievement Finance Park, and the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, to name a few.
Why is it important for your organization to have a workforce that reflects a variety of perspectives and backgrounds?
Davenport is committed to developing a workplace that includes associates of diverse backgrounds in order to utilize their experiences and talents to achieve our business goals. We believe that an environment rich in associates with varying experiences and backgrounds enhances the performance of our organization.
