Alfred Durham had moved recently from Washington to Richmond for his first stint with Richmond police in the spring of 2005 when a family tragedy changed his life and fueled his passion for policing.
Law enforcement experience: Durham began his law enforcement career at Washington's Metropolitan Police Department in 1987.
Military: Durham joined the Marine Corps in 1982 and continued serving in various reserve units until 1999.
College: He holds an associate degree in corrections administration from the University of the District of Columbia, and he's a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

Alfred Durham will be formally sworn in as Richmond's police chief during a public ceremony today at 10 a.m. at Virginia Union University's Coburn Hall, 1500 N. Lombardy St.
