FALLS CHURCH – Beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, Sherrow Avenue will be closed to through traffic until spring 2027 between Seaton Lane/West Cameron Road and South Virginia Avenue for the Sherrow Avenue over Tripps Run culvert replacement project, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Drivers needing to reach properties along Sherrow Avenue will still have access during the closure; however, they will not be able to go beyond the culvert (located between the properties at 421 Sherrow Avenue and 423 Sherrow Avenue) in either direction.
Through traffic will be detoured via West Cameron Road, South Washington Street (Route 29/Route 237), South Maple Avenue, West Annandale Road, Gundry Drive, and South Virginia Avenue back to Sherrow Avenue.
One of the two Sherrow Avenue sidewalks along the culvert will remain open for pedestrians during the road closure.
The new concrete box culvert is scheduled to open to traffic in spring 2027.
The existing pipe culvert that carries Sherrow Avenue over Tripps Run was built in 1980 and has a weight limit of 13 tons; the new culvert will not have a posted weight restriction.
The culvert replacement project to improve safety also includes:
Widening the culvert-crossing sidewalks from five feet wide to six feet wide.
Lowering the top of the existing drainage structure to be level with the sidewalk on the south side of Sherrow Avenue.
Constructing a bench facing the stream at the trail side with extended wing wall as requested by the community and the Falls Church City Council.
The $3.8 million project is financed with federal funding and is scheduled for final completion in spring 2027.
