Richmond, VA – 9/1/2026 – This September, during Hunger Action Month, Feed More is joining the nationwide Feeding America network in calling on Central Virginia to Play Your Part. As the cost of essentials like groceries and energy continue to put pressure on household budgets, everyone can take action to help ensure their neighbors have access to the food they need to thrive.
“This Hunger Action Month, we’re asking everyone to show up for their neighbors facing hunger and play their part,” said Denis McDonough, CEO of Feeding America. “Whether you give, volunteer, speak up or support your community in another way, your action matters. When neighbors care for neighbors, we strengthen our communities.”
Today, the rising cost of everyday essentials is making it harder for families to afford the healthy food they need to thrive. Rising gas, housing, utility and health care costs are putting added pressure on family budgets, and more neighbors are finding themselves making impossible choices — like whether to fill the gas tank or the pantry, buy fresh produce or medication, or pay a utility bill or buy groceries. For many, that means visiting a food pantry for the first time.

In Central Virginia, we estimate that 1 in 9 neighbors experience food insecurity – and of that, 1 in 6 children in our region don’t know where their next meal will come from.
Hunger Action Day falls on September 29, when Feeding America will release the 2026 Elevating Voices: Insights Report, an annual, nationally representative survey of the experiences, concerns and policy views of people facing hunger in the United States.
