CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation will close Route 633 (Cove Garden Road) at the bridge over Norfolk Southern railroad in Albemarle County beginning Monday, Oct. 26, to replace the bridge’s timber deck. The road is expected to reopen Friday, Nov. 20, weather permitting.
The bridge is located just east of Route 29 (Monacan Trail) and approximately 4.3 miles south of Route 712 (Plank Road). VDOT’s bridge crew will replace the existing timber deck, which dates to the structure’s reconstruction in 1997. Access to driveway entrances near the bridge will be maintained during the work.
During the closure, drivers should follow the signed detour using Route 29 and Route 712. The detour is approximately 13 miles long.
The railroad overpass on Route 712 has a vertical clearance of 11 feet, 11 inches. Vehicles and cargo exceeding this height must use an alternate route.
Current traffic conditions, VDOT’s statewide network of traffic cameras, and other travel information are available on the 511 Virginia website, the free VDOT 511 mobile app, or by calling 511 from any phone in Virginia.
VDOT’s Culpeper District includes the counties of Albemarle, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock. The independent city of Charlottesville maintains its own roads.
