Just two weeks out from the Region 4B championships, Atlee High School played host for the Jim Triemplar Memorial Invitational, which featured 29 teams getting their final regular season reps in before we reach the region and state levels of competition.
Along with Atlee, the local competitors from Mechanicsville, Hanover and Patrick Henry joined in on the Saturday festivities, giving us a fun preview of what’s to come at the Region 4B level on May 22.
The hosting Raiders had two events end in first place finishes, with Carissa Ambrose taking the top spot of the 1600-meter run (5:06.99), and their boys 4x800 relay team winning with a time of 8:07.83. They also had a third-place time from Evan Ham in the 100 sprints (11.01) on the boys side, while Kaylin Harris finished in fourth in the same event for the girls team (12.54) and fifth in the 200 (25.76).

In the 100 hurdle, Mauren Verity placed fifth for Atlee (16.85), while also placing fifth in the triple jump (33 feet, 4 inches). In boys field events, Connor Teague took fourth in the pole vault (14-0) and Jack Sheppard took the same position in the shot put (45-0).

Hanover was particularly impressive in its relay runs and field performances, with its girls team having a first place win in the 4x800 relay (9:38.36), second place runner-up finish in the 4x400 (4:16.69) and a third-place run in the 4x100 (50.78). On the boys side, the 4x100 relay team placed fifth (45.03).

In the field, John Williams won in the triple jump (42-8.5), Jack Benhase took second in the pole vault (15-0) and Laila Mercer finished second in the shot put (35-3). They also saw third place finishes from Lilly Zyglocke in the high jump (5-0) and Claire Rosenfelt in the pole vault (9-6).
In individual running events, Ian Jennings finished third in the 400 dash (51.06) and Lydia Miller finished fourth in the 1600 (5:19.09).
Mechanicsville was led by a well-rounded performance from Zoe Curtis, who placed second in four events: the 100 hurdles (15.21), 300 hurdles (46.04), long jump (17-1.75) and triple jump (36-3).
In their individual sprints, Jeremiah Ingram finished second in the 400 race (50.29), and Camille Williams (12.64) and Jontae Tunstall (11.06) both placed fifth in the 100 dash, while Tunstall also took fourth in the 200 (22.29). Ingram later finished fourth in the long jump (20.7.25).
With the region outdoor championships fast approaching, the local teams of Hanover County have rounded into fine form in the last leg of their regular season schedules.
