On May 7, Powhatan High School honored seniors whose chosen path after graduation is to serve our country. Representatives from the U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Army attended the Military Signing Day to recognize these students and speak about the pride they feel in welcoming them into the ranks. Congratulations to these PHS students: Edgar Alejo (Marines), Deric Cypress (Marines), James Davis (Army), Blake Markel (Air Force), Cameron Oliver (Marines), Jason Peyton (Army), Isabella Shaw (Marines), and David Stauffer (Navy).
On May 8, Powhatan High School proudly celebrated 18 seniors who are stepping directly into the workforce after graduation — prepared, committed, and ready to make an impact. On May 9, Powhatan High School celebrated the achievements of several student-athletes who are taking their talents to the next level. The following students have committed to playing at the college level: Ava Harper, Marissa Anderson, Elizabeth Weimer, Luke Wells, Jameson Britt, Conner Hedgepeth, Rhett Boyer, Max Altieri, Grayson Palmore, Mackenzie Halfon, Jamison Wallace, Emma Terry, and Jackson Morris.
The Donut Dollies were 627 women who also served in Vietnam. Community Matters will be hosting a private viewing of a recently released documentary revealing the little-known history of American women who volunteered to serve in the Vietnam War as part of a Red Cross Program will be shown at 1 p.m. on May 20 at the at Pocahontas Landmark Center (4290 Anderson Hwy). This event will feature guest speakers, including the documentary’s executive producer, a local Donut Dollie and others related to local Donut Dollies. The Powhatan Rotarian of the Month for this month is Bruce LaPierre. According to his fellow club members, LaPierre schedules community members to speak at weekly club meetings, currently serves as club treasurer and organizes Powhatan Rotarians to work at the club’s fundraising event, the Westchester Commons Concert Series. “Mostly, Bruce just rolls up his sleeves and shows up for duty when the opportunity and need arises,” said the group in a recent Facebook post. “Thank you, Bruce, for all that you do for our Powhatan Rotary Club.”
Virginia State Parks will feature kid-friendly programming in celebration of National Kids to Parks Day on May 17, encouraging kids to explore the outdoors and discover science, history, park stewardship and adventure. Now in its 15th year, National Kids to Parks Day is sponsored by National Parks Trust and is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May. This national day of outdoor play connects kids and families with our public lands while exploring educational opportunities and developing more active, healthy lifestyles. Programs at Virginia State Parks include a variety of activities such as kayaking, hiking, fishing and crafting. Events vary by park location, and each event focuses on the natural and cultural features of the park.
