This July, Riverside Center for the Performing Arts brings the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical "Next to Normal" to Fredericksburg, offering a poignant theatrical experience that tackles mental health with unflinching honesty and emotional depth.
A Celebrated Return to Riverside
Running from July 2 through August 3, this production features the return of husband and wife duo Adrianne Hick and Andrew Foote to the Riverside stage. Audiences may remember Hick from her memorable performances as Alice Murphy in "Bright Star," Mother in "Ragtime," and Francesca Johnson in "The Bridges of Madison County." Foote made his Riverside debut in 2023 as Robert Kincaide in "The Bridges of Madison County."
Award-Winning Production with a Powerful Message
"Next to Normal," with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt, is no ordinary musical. The original production won three 2009 Tony Awards, including Best Musical Score, and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize. Critics from The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times all named it among the year's ten best shows. Currently, a London revival plays at the Wyndham's Theatre.
The story follows what appears to be a typical American family: an architect father, a mother rushing to pack lunches and pour cereal, and two bright, wise-cracking teenagers. Yet beneath this facade of normalcy lies a 16-year battle with bipolar disorder that affects every family member. The musical takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their struggles with love, sympathy, and heart.
More Than Entertainment: A Community Resource
Riverside's decision to present this musical aligns perfectly with Mental Health Awareness Month in May. As a nonprofit theater, Riverside aims to connect deeply with the community through productions that foster empathy and understanding.
Every Thursday throughout the production's run, Riverside will host guest speakers addressing various aspects of mental health. Antwuan Gay, brother of the late Marvin Gaye, will kick off this special series. Representatives from Mental Health America, Rappahannock Community Service Board, Fredericksburg Family Health Center, and other organizations will also participate, creating opportunities for meaningful community discussion.
