Glen Allen-based Genworth Financial is a Fortune 500 company that provides insurance and annuities for the aging population. Its affiliate and subsidiary, CareScout, helps seniors and their families find the home care they need to navigate the challenges of aging. For the third year in a row, Genworth is one of Greater Richmond’s Top Workplaces. The company puts as much deliberation and effort into caring for their workforce as they do the families they serve, said Chief Human Resources Officer Melissa Hagerman.

How do you feel your workplace culture contributes to your company being named a Top Workplace?
Over the last few years, we’ve tried to refresh our focus on how we care for our associates. We are grounded in the belief that customer care starts with associate care. We have a business that’s anchored to providing quality care to the adult population. The care they get is pivotal. We have fundamentally embraced caring for those who work for us.

What’s so important about having an attractive benefits package?
We consider benefits part of a total rewards package that provides all the tools to allow associates and their families to live their best life and have all needs met. Last year we conducted a survey, asking a lot of questions about what they valued most and what we could enhance. The most important thing we discovered is that we need a holistic approach, making sure we are caring for people emotionally, physically and financially.
How has your company adapted to the evolving expectations around remote and flexible work?
We built our new headquarters that opened in April 2024 with an in-person mindset that encourages connection. There is a mental health counselor’s office as well as a fitness center and full cafeteria with a barista. We make it welcoming for employees. We also have a hybrid schedule. On Tuesday and Wednesday, associates come in, and on Monday, Thursday and Friday they have flexibility to work remotely if they want. People appreciate the two days a week in the office to do networking and attend educational events. Our hybrid model that we’ve created allows us to prioritize flexibility.
There is a fitness center on site at Genworth.
Why is it important for your organization to have a workforce that reflects a variety of perspectives and backgrounds?
When we think about customers and their families and what they’re going through when we interact, it’s typically some of the most difficult times in their life. They’re figuring out how to navigate the needs of loved ones. Understanding that level of empathy is important. Making sure that we have a workforce from a variety of backgrounds is really important to serve a customer base that also has a variety of backgrounds.
