Tacky Lights season is wrapping up but there is still time to see the brightest houses in Richmond.
It’s the super bright time of year when local houses decorate with over-the-top, super-bright holiday displays.
It all started in 1985, when Richmond DJ Mad Dog Gottlieb booked a Winn Transportation bus for a “tacky lights” tour of 10 to 12 houses. The tour was a huge hit. The Richmond Times-Dispatch started compiling the Tacky Lights list in 1989 and has been doing it ever since.
The Tacky Light tour is free, you can do it yourself and anyone can enjoy the lights. You just have to know where to find them. That’s where the Tacky Lights list comes in handy.

Houses must have 40,000 lights to be on the list. You can submit a house here.

“The last few years, we felt that we’ve finally gotten to a place where we could actually make it on the tour, so actually being on the list this year was a rush of excitement for us both, I think," said Ashley Willis of their home, a first-time participant in the Tacky Lights Tour. "Overall, it’s a lot of work, but a lot of fun. I love that my husband wants to do it, and I know his dad is proud. The bonus to it all is having other people get to enjoy it now, too."
